Plum Blossom Gruel
梅花粥 〔梅花粥〕 méi huā zhōu

Ingredients
- Bái méi huā (白梅花 Mume Flos Albus, white mume flower) 3–5g
- Jīng mǐ (粳米 Oryzae Semen, non-glutinous rice) 30–60g
Actions: Soothes the liver and rectifies qì; fortifies the spleen and opens the stomach.
Indications: Liver-stomach qì pain, plum-pit qì, oppression in the chest, belching, reduced eating, and sore-toxin.
Method: Boil the rice to make a gruel, and then add the mume flowers and bring to the boil to or three times before serving.
Rationale: Bái méi huā is the flower of the Wū méi plum tree that produces Wū méi fruit used to expel worms. It is sour and astringent, and in nature it is balanced. It enters the liver channel, and is commonly used to soothe the liver and harmonize the stomach in the treatment of liver-stomach qì pain and oppression in the chest or plum-pit qì.
