Rationale: The sovereign agents in this formula are Niú huáng, Xióng huáng, and toad venom, which are powerful, quick-acting toxin-attacking and bind-dispersing agents. Niú huáng clears heat and transforms phlegm. Xióng huáng dries dampness and resolves toxin. Toad venom disperses swelling and relieves pain. As to the other agents, Zhēn zhū mǔ combined with Niú huáng clears heat and sweeps phlegm. Bīng piàn, which disperses heat and relieves pain, and Shè xiāng, which is aromatic and pervasive, enhance and accelerate the action of the other agents, hence they are they supporting (minister) agents in the formula. Finally, weed soot disperses binds and disinhibits the throat, and is good for any mouth sores.
