Constraining the lung and relieving cough
敛肺止咳 〔斂肺止咳〕liǎn fèi zhǐ ké
A method of treatment used to address enduring cough due to lung vacuity characterized by scant phlegm, hasty breathing, spontaneous sweating, dry mouth and tongue, and vacuous rapid pulse.
Medicinal therapy: Lung-constraining cough-relieving medicinals such as schisandra (Schisandrae Fructus, 五味子 wǔ wèi zǐ), chebule (Chebulae Fructus, 诃子 hē zǐ), and poppy husk (Papaveris Pericarpium, 罂粟壳 yīng sù ké) can be combined with general cough-relieving medicinals such as stemona (Stemonae Radix, 百部 bǎi bù), aster (Asteris Radix, 紫菀 zǐ wǎn), aristolochia fruit (Aristolochiae Fructus, 马兜铃 mǎ dōu líng), loquat leaf (Eriobotryae Folium, 枇杷叶 pí pá yè), and coltsfoot (Farfarae Flos, 款冬花 kuǎn dōng huā).
A commonly used lung-constraining cough-relieving formula is
Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on LU, LI, and back transport points. Main points: LU-7 (Broken Sequence, 列缺 liè quē), LU-9 (Great Abyss, 太渊 tài yuān), LU-5 (Cubit Marsh, 尺泽 chǐ zé), and BL-13 (Lung Transport, 肺俞 fèi shù). For exterior vacuity, add LI-4 (Union Valley, 合谷 hé gǔ) and ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ). For yīn vacuity, add BL-23 (Kidney Transport, 肾俞 shèn shù), KI-3 (Great Ravine, 太溪 tài xī), and KI-6 (Shining Sea, 照海 zhào hǎi), needling with supplementation.
