Ingredients

Actions: Constrains the lung and relieves cough; supplements qì and nourishes yīn.

Indications: Enduring cough causing lung vacuity with hasty rapid breathing, spontaneous sweating, and a vacuous pulse.

Method: Now prepared as a decoction.

Rationale: Yingsuke constrains the lung, relieves cough, and calms panting. It is effective in this action even when used singly. Wū méi and Wǔ wèi zǐ help the lung-constraining action of yingsuke and prevent dispersion of lung qì. These three agents together are mutually intensifying. Jié gěng is an opposite-assisting agent to yingsuke, ensuring that constraining the lung does not impair the diffusion of lung qì. It also helps conducts the other agents upward. Chuān bèi mǔ, Kuǎn dōng huā, and Sāng bái pí depurate the lung, transform phlegm and relieve cough. Rén shēn supplements lung qì, while ē jiāo nourishing lung yīn.
