White dry eye

白涩症 〔白澀症〕bái sè zhèng

Also white eye. Dryness of the eyes with blurring of the vision without redness or swelling or other objective signs. White dry eye is attributed to vacuity fire flaming upward that stems either from insufficiency of lung yīn or from liver-kidney yīn vacuity, or to brewing damp-heat with deep-lying fire in the qì aspect.

Medicinal therapy: For insufficiency of lung yīn with vacuity fire flaming upward, use Yīn-Nourishing Lung-Clearing Decoction (养阴清肺汤 yǎng yīn qīng fèi tāng). For liver-kidney yīn vacuity with vacuity fire flaming upward, use Lycium Berry, Chrysanthemum, and Rehmannia Pill (杞菊地黄丸 qǐ jú dì huáng wán) plus Chinese angelica (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 当归 dāng guī) and white peony (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 白芍药 bái sháo yào). For damp-heat, use variations of Three Kernels Decoction (三仁汤 sān rén tāng) combined with Mulberry Root Bark Decoction (桑白皮汤 sāng bái pí tāng).
