Strangury of pregnancy

子淋 〔子淋〕zǐ lín

From The Origin and Indicators of Disease (诸病源候论 zhū bìng yuán hòu lùn). Strangury (painful, dribbling urination) during pregnancy. Strangury of pregnancy is due to yīn vacuity, repletion heat, damp-heat, or qì vacuity disturbing bladder qì transformation.

Patterns

Yīn vacuity (阴虚 yīn xū) causes strangury with tidal reddening of the cheeks and heart vexation.

Medicinal therapy: Clear heat, nourish yīn, and free strangury. Use Anemarrhena and Phellodendron Eight-Ingredient Pill (知柏八味丸 zhī bǎi bā wèi wán).

Repletion heat (实热 shí rè) causes strangury with bitter taste in the mouth, thirst, and mouth and tongue sores.

Medicinal therapy: Clear heat, drain fire, and free strangury. Use Red-Abducting Powder (导赤散 dǎo chì sǎn).

Damp-heat (湿热 shī rè) causes strangury with heavy fatigued limbs and rough painful urination.

Medicinal therapy: Clear heat, disinhibit dampness, and free strangury. Use Five Stranguries Powder (五淋散 wǔ lín sǎn).

Qì vacuity (气虚 qì xū) preventing the retention of urine causes strangury marked by pain after urination.

Medicinal therapy: Boost qì and check strangury. Use formulas such as Qì-Boosting Strangury-Checking Decoction (益气止淋汤 yì qì zhǐ lín tāng).
