Rectifying qì and harmonizing provisioning

理气和营 〔理氣和營〕lǐ qì hé yíng

A method of treatment used to address depressed liver qì and provisioning-blood disharmony in the treatment of pathoconditions characterized by emotional depression, vexation and agitation, rib-side pain, qì stagnation in the chest, and in some cases distension of the breasts, menstrual irregularities, and menstrual pain.

Medicinal therapy: medicinals used include liver-coursing and qì rectifying medicinals such as bupleurum (Bupleuri Radix, 柴胡 chái hú), unripe tangerine peel (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, 青皮 qīng pí), cyperus (Cyperi Rhizoma, 香附子 xiāng fù zǐ), and toosendan (Toosendan Fructus, 川楝子 chuān liàn zǐ), combined with blood-nourishing, provisioning-harmonizing medicinals like Chinese angelica (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 当归 dāng guī), peony (Paeoniae Radix, 芍药 sháo yào), and salvia (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix, 丹参 dān shēn). Blood-quickening stasis-transforming medicinals such as corydalis (Corydalis Rhizoma, 延胡索 yán hú suǒ), carthamus (Carthami Flos, 红花 hóng huā), madder (Rubiae Radix, 茜草根 qiàn cǎo gēn), and curcuma (Curcumae Radix, 郁金 yù jīn) may be added where pain is particularly pronounced or static blood signs are present. Conditions involving liver fire may call for the admixture of medicinals such as gardenia (Gardeniae Fructus, 山栀子 shān zhī zǐ) and moutan (Moutan Cortex, 牡丹皮 mǔ dān pí).

A representative formula is Free Wanderer Powder (逍遥散 xiāo yáo sǎn).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment on PC, LR, and SP. Select PC-6 (Inner Pass, 内关 nèi guān), LR-3 (Supreme Surge, 太冲 tài chōng), SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), BL-18 (Liver Transport, 肝俞 gān shù), BL-17 (Diaphragm Transport, 膈俞 gé shù), BL-20 (Spleen Transport, 脾俞 pí shù), LR-14 (Cycle Gate, 期门 qī mén), and ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ); needle with even supplementation and drainage.
