Postpartum impediment pattern

产后痹证 〔產後痹證〕 chǎn hòu bì zhèng

An impediment () pattern arising when major postpartum vacuity causes insecurity of the interstices allowing wind-cold-damp evils to exploit the vacuity and enter the flesh and channels and give rise to generalized or local joint pain.

Medicinal therapy: Treat by supporting right and nourishing the blood, assisted by dispelling the evil. Use variations of Schizonepeta and Saposhnikovia Four Agents Decoction (荆防四物汤 jīng fáng sì wù tāng). Use of acrid dry agents should be limited in major vacuity of right qì.

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on CV, SP, ST, LR, and GB. To support right and nourish the blood, select BL-20 (Spleen Transport, 脾俞 pí shù), BL-17 (Diaphragm Transport, 膈俞 gé shù), CV-6 (Sea of Qì, 气海 qì hǎi), ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ), LR-3 (Supreme Surge, 太冲 tài chōng), and SP-6 (Three Yīn Intersection, 三阴交 sān yīn jiāo), needling with supplementation and adding moxa.

Point selection according to external evils: For wind evil, needle with drainage at GB-20 (Wind Pool, 风池 fēng chí), GV-16 (Wind Mansion, 风府 fēng fǔ), and SP-10 (Sea of Blood, 血海 xuè hǎi). For cold evil, needle with drainage and moxa at BL-23 (Kidney Transport, 肾俞 shèn shù), GV-4 (Life Gate, 命门 mìng mén), and CV-4 (Pass Head, 关元 guān yuán). For dampness evil, needle with drainage and moxa at SP-9 (Yīn Mound Spring, 阴陵泉 yīn líng quán) and SP-5 (Shang Hill, 商丘 shāng qiū).
