Nipple wind

乳头风 〔乳頭風〕rǔ tóu féng

Also cracked nipple. A disease of the nipple or areola characterized by painful fissuring, bleeding, and exudation of sticky fluid and sometimes with scabbing. Nipple wind is attributed to liver fire failing to discharge and liver-stomach damp-heat. It can easily develop into an external blowing mammary welling-abscess.

Biomedical correspondence: cracked nipple (fissure of nipple, rhagadia mammae).

Medicinal therapy: Treat by clearing the liver and draining fire with formulas such as Gentian Liver-Draining Decoction (龙胆泻肝汤 lóng dǎn xiè gān tāng) taken orally and Flesh-Engendering Jade and Red Paste (生肌玉红膏 shēng jī yù hóng gāo) applied topically. For damp ulceration, apply an ointment composed of 20 calcined alum (Alumen Dehydratum, 枯矾 kū fán), 10 calomel (Calomelas, 轻粉 qīng fěn), 10 gypsum (Gypsum Fibrosum, 石膏 shí gāo), and 60 petroleum jelly (Vaseline).
