Midstage pattern
半表半里证 〔半表半裏證〕 bàn biǎo bàn lǐ zhèng
Also half exterior half interior pattern. A disease pattern occurring when an exterior evil fails to reach the interior and right qì is too weak to fight it. The signs are alternating heat effusion and aversion to cold, [suffering of] chest and rib-side fullness, heart vexation, no desire for food and drink, bitter taste in the mouth, dry pharynx, dizzy vision, and stringlike pulse. The etiology of midstage patterns is considered in detail under lesser yáng (shào yáng) disease.
Medicinal therapy: Since these are not exterior patterns, they cannot be treated by sweating. Because the evil has not completely penetrated the interior, the normal procedures for the treatment of interior patterns are also excluded. Instead, the method of harmonization is applied. The basic formula is
Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on TB and GB. Select TB-4 (Yáng Pool, 阳池 yáng chí), PC-6 (Inner Pass, 内关 nèi guān), GB-40 (Hill Ruins, 丘墟 qiū xū), and LR-5 (Woodworm Canal, 蠡沟 lǐ gōu); needle with even supplementation and drainage.
