Malign flesh

恶肉 〔惡肉〕 è ròu

A disease described in Emergency Standby Remedies (肘后备急方 zhǒu hòu bèi jí fāng(281–341, Jìn)) in the following terms: A fleshy growth red as a rice bean, protruding from the body, becoming longer like cow’s or mare’s teats or like a cock’s crest. It should be treated by taking a decoction of rhaponticum (Rhapontici Radix, 漏芦 lòu lú) orally, and by cauterizing the malign flesh with a red-hot needle three times a day and applying Cimicifuga Paste (升麻膏 shēng má gāo).
