Interrupting malaria

截疟 〔截瘧〕jié nüè

A method of treating malaria applied two to three hours before an episode to prevent its arrival. Interrupting malaria makes use of medicinals such as dichroa (Dichroae Radix, 常山 cháng shān), areca (Arecae Semen, 槟榔 bīng láng), tsaoko (Tsaoko Fructus, 草果 cǎo guǒ), and ginger pinellia (Pinelliae Tuber cum Zingibere Praeparatum, 姜半夏 jiāng bàn xià), and formulas such as Malaria-Interrupting Seven-Jewel Beverage (截疟七宝饮 jié nüè qī bǎo yǐn) or Spleen-Clearing Beverage (清脾饮 qīng pí yǐn), or by needling points such GV-14 (Great Hammer, 大椎 dà zhuī), SI-3 (Back Ravine, 后溪 hòu xī), and PC-5 (Intermediary Courier, 间使 jiān shǐ), needling with drainage.
