Depressed gallbladder and harassing phlegm

A disease pattern chiefly characterized by gallbladder timidity and susceptibility to fright; insomnia and profuse dreaming; bitter taste in the mouth; oppression in the chest and rib-side.
Description: This pattern is not mentioned in all Chinese diagnostics texts. It is marked by gallbladder timidity and susceptibility to fright; fright palpitation; vexation and agitation; insomnia; profuse dreaming; tendency to wake easily from sleep; dizzy head and vision; oppression in the chest and distension in the rib-side; affect-mind depression; bitter taste in the mouth; in some cases, retching and vomiting. The facial complexion is yellow and the tongue has a slimy yellow tongue fur; the pulse is stringlike and moderate or stringlike and rapid.
Pathogenesis: This repletion pattern usually stems from affect-mind excesses causing qì depression that engenders phlegm, which in time transforms into fire.
Analysis of signs
- Disquietude of gallbladder qì and heart spirit: Gallbladder timidity and susceptibility to fright; tendency to wake easily from sleep.
- Phlegm-heat harassing the heart and spirit: Vexation and agitation; fright palpitation; insomnia; and profuse dreaming.
- Phlegm-heat harassing the upper body: Dizzy head and vision.
- Phlegm-heat invading the stomach: Retching and vomiting.
- Heat forcing gallbladder qì upward: Bitter taste in the mouth.
- Inhibited qì dynamic: Oppression in the chest and distension in the rib-side; affect-mind depression.
- Tongue: Slimy yellow tongue fur.
- Pulse: Stringlike and moderate or stringlike and rapid.
