Deep-lying rheum

伏饮 〔伏飲〕fú yǐn

From Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet (金匮要略 jīn guì yào lüè, tán yǐn ké sòu bìng mài zhèng bìng zhì). Phlegm-rheum lying latent in the body or residual lodged rheum. Deep-lying rheum is characterized by frequent episodes of panting and fullness, and coughing and spitting. The episodes are often brought on by contraction of external cold evil, in which case there is abhorrence of cold, heat effusion, back and lumbar pain, spontaneous tearing, and twitching and jerking of the body.

Biomedical correspondence: chronic bronchitis, pulmonary emphysema, pulmogenic heart disease.

Medicinal therapy: Transform yīn and expel evil; support right and secure the root. Use Minor Black Dragon Decoction (小青龙汤 xiǎo qīng lóng tāng) or Woody Fangji Decoction (木防己汤 mù fáng jǐ tāng).
