SP-10 Sea of Blood

血海 〔血海〕 xuè hǎi

Alternate names: 百虫窠 bǎi chóng kē, Hundred Worm Burrow; 血郄 xuè xī, Blood Cleft

Channel: SP, foot greater yīn (tài yīn) spleen channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the anteromedial aspect of the thigh, in the prominence of the vastus medialis muscle 2 cùn superior and slightly medial to the superior medial corner of the patella.

Classical location: Two and a half cùn above the kneecap, on the border of the white flesh on the inner side. From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: Muscular branches of the femoral artery and vein. The anterior femoral cutaneous nerve and the muscular branch of the femoral nerve.

Action: Regulates and clears the blood; perfuses the lower burner.

Modern indications: Menstrual irregularities; amenorrhea; flooding and spotting; dormant papules: eczema; cinnabar toxin (dān dú).

Classical indications: Malign blood discharge from the uterus; painful, itching sores or red, swollen purulent sores on the inner side of the thigh; genital sores; the five stranguries.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.5‒1.2 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 3‒5 cones; pole 5‒10 min.

Needle sensation: Localized twinge and distension, sometimes spreading into the knee joint, or to the hip.

Point name meaning:
