LR-7 Knee Joint

膝关 〔膝關〕 xī guān

Channel: LR, foot reverting yīn (jué yīn) liver channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the medial aspect of the lower leg, below the inferior border of the medial condyle of the tibia, in the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle, 1 cùn posterior to SP-9.

Classical location: In the depression two cùn below the Inner Eye of the Knee (M-LE-16). From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: At the deeper level, the posterior tibial artery. The branch of the medial sural cutaneous nerve; deeper, the tibial nerve.

Action: Frees the channels and network vessels; disinhibits the joints; dispels wind and relieves pain.

Modern indications: Painful swelling of the knee.

Classical indications: Pain in the medial aspect of the knee causing an inability to bend or extend the leg; smaller abdominal pain accompanied by pharyngeal pain; wind impediment (fēng bì).

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.3‒0.6 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 3‒5 cones; pole 5 min.

Point name meaning:

This point is located near, and treats diseases affecting, the knee. Thus the name could be rendered as either Knee Joint or Passageway to the Knee, depending on which meaning of (guān) is chosen. See acupoint names: origins, meanings, and translations.
