Actions and indications: This light green medicinal is the embryo of the lotus seed. It clears the heart, eliminates heat, and quiets the spirit. It also promotes interaction of the heart and kidney, astringes essence, and stanches bleeding. It is used for hyperactive heart fire orheat vexation with clouded spirit in warm disease. It also treats insomnia and seminal emission due to noninteraction of the heart and kidney, as well as vomiting of blood (blood ejection) due to blood heat. Modern research shows that lián zǐ xīn is also effective for hypertension that manifests in repletion patterns.

Dosage and method: Oral: 1.5–3g in decoctions.

Production area: Húnán, Húběi, Fújiàn, Jiāngsū, Zhèjiāng.
