Properties: Bitter, sweet, and astringent; slightly warm; nontoxic.

Actions and indications: Enriches and nourishes, strengthens and invigorates, supplements the blood; it can constrain essential qì and blacken the hair and beard.* Treats vacuity in enduring disease; anemia; premature graying; chronic wind impediment (fēng bì); limp aching lumbus and knees; neurasthenia sexualis; hemorrhoids; bleeding in the intestines; yīn vacuity; enduring malaria; ulcers. Used fresh for old-age constipation.*

Quality: Large plump farinaceous tubers that are white on the cross section are best.

Production area: Héběi, Shāndōng.
