Cinnamon Twig, Licorice, Dragon Bone, and Oyster Shell Decoction
桂枝甘草龙骨牡蛎汤 〔桂枝甘草龍骨牡蠣湯〕guì zhī gān cǎo lóng gǔ mǔ lì tāng

Ingredients:
- Guì zhī (桂枝 Cinnamomi Ramulus, cinnamon twig) 3–9g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) (mix-fried) 6–9g
- Lóng gǔ (龙骨 Mastodi Ossis Fossilia, dragon bone) (calcined) 15g
- Mǔ lì (牡蛎 Ostreae Concha, oyster shell) (calcined) 15–30g
Action: Settles fright and calms the spirit; frees yáng and checks sweating.
Indication: Heart yáng vacuity with heart palpitation or fearful throbbing, sweating, and cold limbs. Tongue: Pale and moist. Pulse: Floating and moderate or bound.

Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Guì zhī is acrid, sweet, and warm. It assists heart yáng. Gān cǎo is sweet and warm. It supplements the center and boosts qì. These two agents together warm and free heart yáng. The Gān cǎo is used in large quantities to make use of its tension relieving action to address heart palpitation and heart vexation. Lóng gǔ and Mǔ lì quiet the spirit, and also constrain sweating.
