Source: Jīn Guì Yào Lüè 金匮要略

Ingredients

• Guì zhī (桂枝 Cinnamomi Ramulus, cinnamon twig) 12g
• Fù zǐ (附子 Aconiti Radix Lateralis Praeparata, aconite [accessory root]) (blast-fried) 9g
• Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) (mix-fried) 6g
• Shēng jiāng (生姜 Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, fresh ginger) 9g
• Dà zǎo (大枣 Jujubae Fructus, jujube) 12 pieces

Actions: Warms the channels and frees yáng, dispersing wind-damp.

Indications: Contention between wind and damp with heat effusion, generalized pain, inability to turn sides, and absence of vomiting or thirst. Pulse: Floating, rough, and vacuous.

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: Guì zhī outthrusts provisioning and defense, dispelling wind-cold from the fleshy exterior. Fù zǐ warms the channels and disperses cold, dispelling cold-damp from the channels and network vessels. Both agents are warm (hot) acrid pervasive dispersing agents. Shēng jiāng and Dà zǎo not only harmonize provisioning and defense but also help the Guì zhī to warm and free the channels. Gān cǎo helps to move impediment (bì) and relieve pain when combined with Fù zǐ.

Notes: This is Guì zhī tāng (桂枝汤 Cinnamon Twig Decoction) minus Bái sháo and plus Fù zǐ.
