Trichosanthes and Unripe Bitter Orange Decoction

瓜蒌枳实汤 〔瓜蔞枳實湯〕 guā lóu zhǐ shí tāng

Ingredients

Actions: Clears liver and kidney heat; moistens dryness and relieves cough; dispels phlegm.

Indications: Repletion patterns of copious phlegm that is difficult to expectorate, pain and fullness in the chest. Tongue: Red with dry yellow fur. Pulse: Slippery. fy see jianming 875 (主治)治痰结咯吐不出,... (应该是痰结而不是copious phlegm

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: Zhī zǐ clears heat and drains fire. Huáng qín also drains fire, and is especially effective in eliminating damp-heat. Dāng guī and Gān cǎo nourish the blood and clear heat from the chest and stomach. Guā lóu and Bèi mǔ moisten the lung and transform phlegm. Zhú lì clears heat, and with ginger it disinhibits the phlegm to help expectoration. Zhǐ shí, Jié gěng, Chén pí, Shā rén, Mù xiāng, and Fú líng move qì thereby helping the phlegm-transforming agents.
