Poria and Cuscuta Elixir
茯菟丹 〔茯菟丹〕 fú tù dān

Ingredients
- Tù sī zǐ (菟丝子 Cuscutae Semen, cuscuta [seed]) 25g
- Bái fú líng (白茯苓 Poria Alba, white poria) 20g
- Lián ròu (莲肉 Nelumbinis Semen, lotus seed) 20g
- Shān yào (山药 Dioscoreae Rhizoma, dioscorea [root]) 20g
- Wǔ wèi zǐ (五味子 Schisandrae Fructus, schisandra [berry]) 10g
Actions: Boosts the kidney and astringes essence; fortifies the spleen and percolates dampness.
Indications: Seminal emission, enuresis, or clear thin vaginal discharge, or persistent diarrhea with nontransformation of grain and water due to insecurity of kidney qì and the spleen failing to absorb essence. These signs may be accompanied by limp aching lumbus and knees. Tongue: Pale with white fur. Pulse: Moderate and weak.
Dosage: 3–6g twice a day.
Rationale: Tù sī zǐ and lotus seed boost the kidney and secure essence. Combined with Shān yào, they can also supplement the spleen and check diarrhea. Shān yào supplements spleen yīn, while Fú líng percolates spleen turbidity. These two agents together restore the spleen's function of upbearing the clear and downbearing the turbid, and absorbing essence. Wǔ wèi zǐ combined with lotus seed promotes the interaction of the heart and kidney, as well as quieting the spirit and sharpening the wits. In addition, it enhances the ability of the formula to treat seminal emission, enuresis, and vaginal discharge.
