Ophiopogon and Asparagus Decoction
二冬汤 〔二冬湯〕èr dōng tāng

Ingredients:
- Tiān dōng (天冬 Asparagi Radix, asparagus [root]) 15g
- Mài dōng (麦冬 Ophiopogonis Radix, ophiopogon [root]) 15g
- Tiān huā fěn (天花粉 Trichosanthis Radix, trichosanthes root) 15g
- Dǎng shēn (党参 Codonopsis Radix, codonopsis [root]) 10g
- Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]) 6g
- Zhī mǔ (知母 Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, anemarrhena [root]) 6g
- Hé yè (荷叶 Nelumbinis Folium, lotus leaf) 6g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) 3g
Action: Clears heat and engenders liquid; boosts qì and allays thirst.
Indication: Upper dispersion, i.e., dispersion-thirst (xiāo kě) of the upper burner, with signs of dryness-heat damaging the lung, and poor distribution of pulmonary liquid such as vexation and thirst, increased fluid intake; dry mouth and tongue, and frequent urination. Tongue: Red with scant fur. Pulse: Fine and rapid.

Method: Decoct in water.
Rationale: Tiān dōng, Mài dōng and Tiān huā fěn are all cold, sweet, and slightly bitter. They clear heat and engender liquid. Dǎng shēn and Gān cǎo boost qì and engender liquid. Bò hé combined with Dǎng shēn upbears yáng and boosts qì, promoting the transportation of fluids up from the spleen to the lung. Zhī mǔ and Huáng qín clear and discharge stomach fire.
