Jade Humor Decoction
玉液汤 〔玉液湯〕yù yè tāng

Ingredients:
- Shēng shān yào (生山药 Dioscoreae Rhizoma Crudum, raw dioscorea [root]) 30g
- Shēng huáng qí (生黄芪 Astragali Radix Cruda, raw astragalus [root]) 15g
- Zhī mǔ (知母 Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, anemarrhena [root]) 15g
- Shēng jī nèi jīn (生鸡内金 Galli Gigeriae Endothelium Crudum, raw gizzard lining) 6g
- Gé gēn (葛根 Puerariae Radix, pueraria [root]) 5g
- Wǔ wèi zǐ (五味子 Schisandrae Fructus, schisandra [berry]) 9g
- Tiān huā fěn (天花粉 Trichosanthis Radix, trichosanthes root) 9g
Action: Boosts qì and engenders liquid; moistens dryness and allays thirst.
Indication: Dispersion-thirst (xiāo kě) with signs of qì failing to distribute liquid, kidney vacuity, and stomach dryness, such as thirst, frequent urination withcopious urine, turbid urine, fatigue, and shortness of breath. Pulse: Vacuous, fine, and forceless.

Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Shān yào, Gé gēn, Zhī mǔ, and Guā lóu engender liquid and allay thirst. Jī nèi jīn moves the spleen and disperses food; it helps to transform the essence of grain and water into fluids. Wǔ wèi zǐ strengthens and secures the kidney, preventing loss of fluid.
Variations:
Qì vacuity with faint pulse: Add Rén shēn (人参 Ginseng Radix, ginseng).- Increased urination: Add Shān zhū yú (山茱萸 Corni Fructus, cornus [fruit]).
- Exuberant heart-lung fire: Add Huáng lián (黄连 Coptidis Rhizoma, coptis [root]) and Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]).
