Actions: Supplements the kidney; quiets the spirit, and opens the orifices.
Indications: Stiff tongue preventing speech, paralyzed legs, and dry mouth with no desire to drink. Tongue fur: Slimy
Rationale: Fù zǐ, Bā jǐ tiān, Ròu guì, and Ròu cōng róng warm and invigorate kidney yáng, so as to prevent the upward flood of water, and reduce phlegm. Since the kidney is the viscus of fire and water, and its yīn and yáng aspects are interdependent, Shú dì huáng and Shān zhū yú, which enrich kidney yīn without being cold, provide a balance treatment for the kidney. Shí hú and Mài dōng promote the healthy interaction of yīn and yáng. Shí chāng pú, Fú líng, Yuǎn zhì, Wǔ wèi zǐ, Bò hé, and Shēng jiāng transform phlegm and open the orifices. The Dà zǎo is added to work with ginger to harmonize the center; it is of minor importance.
