Flour Gruel
拔粥 〔拔粥〕 bá zhōu

Ingredients
- Xiè bái (薤白 Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus, long-stamen onion [bulb]) 10–15g
- Cōng bái (葱白 Allii Fistulosi Bulbus, scallion white) 2 stalks
- Xiǎo mài miàn fěnw (小麦面粉 Tritici Farina, wheat flour) 60–90g
- Jīng mǐ (粳米 Oryzae Semen, non-glutinous rice)
Actions: Loosens the chest and relieves pain; moves qì and checks dysentery.
Indications: Dysentery with tenesmus; chest impediment (xiōng bì) heart pain.
Method: Wash the long-stamen onion and scallion, blend with the flour and cold water, and pour into boiling water. 30–60 gr fresh long-stamen onion bulbs may be used instead of the dried.
Rationale: Xiè bái is warm, acrid, and nontoxic. It rectifies qì, loosens the chest, frees yáng, and disperses binds. It treats chest impediment (xiōng bì)heart pain radiating through to the back, glomus in the stomach duct, dry retching, and dysentery with tenesmus. Cōng bái, which is one of the common ingredients in cooking, is used medicinally free yáng and check dysentery.
