Wind-Dispersing Powder1

消风散1 〔消風散1〕 xiāo fēng sǎn1

Ingredients

Actions: Courses wind and checks itching; clears heat and eliminates dampness.

Indications: Wind papules (urticaria) or eczema due to wind toxin contending with damp-heat in the interstices of the flesh, and characterized by red, itchy papules that exude liquid when scratched. Tongue fur: White or yellow. Pulse: Floating, rapid, and forceful.

Rationale: Cāng zhú is a warm, acrid, effusing and dispersing agents that dispels wind and overcomes dampness. Kǔ shēn clears heat, eliminates dampness, and dispels wind. Jīng jiè suì, Fáng fēng, Niú bàng zǐ, and Chán tuì open the interstices and outthrust the wind in the exterior. Shí gāo and Zhī mǔ clear heat, while Mù tōng clears heat and disinhibits dampness. Dāng guī harmonizes provisioning and quickens the blood, thus addressing the wind-toxin and the qì and blood stagnation it causes. With Gān cǎo it helps to prevent the damage to the stomach by the cold bitterness of Shí gāo and Zhī mǔ. Shēng dì huáng clears heat and cools the blood, while sesame nourishes the blood and moistens dryness.
