Ingredients:

• Xuán shēn (玄参 Scrophulariae Radix, scrophularia [root]) 90g
• Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 60g
• Yín huā (银花 Lonicerae Flos, lonicera [flower]) 90g
• Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) 30g

Action: Clears heat and resolves toxin; enriches yīn and quickens the blood.

Indication: Sloughing flat-abscess (tuō jū) (obliterative phlebitis) with local pain, redness and swelling, and pus-like discharge, and general signs such as heat vexation and thirst.

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: The sovereign agentss are Jīn yín huā and Xuán shēn, which clear heat and resolve toxin. The minister is Xuán shēn, which is bitter, sweet, salty, cold and moist, which clears heat, cools the blood, discharges fire, and resolves toxin, as well as enriching yīn humor and softening hardness. The assistant is Dāng guī, which not only nourishes the blood but also quickens the blood and dispels stasis, which helps both to resolve toxin and engender new flesh. The courier is Shēng gān cǎo, which helps Lián qiào to resolve toxin, and so is used in large amounts.

Variations:

• Acute pain: Add Rǔ xiāng (乳香 Olibanum , frankincense) and Mò yào (没药 Myrrha , myrrh).
• Severe heat toxin: Add Pú gōng yīng (蒲公英 Taraxaci Herba, dandelion), Chì xiǎo dòu (赤小豆 Vignae Semen, rice bean), Chuān shān jiǎ (穿山甲 Manis Squama, pangolin scales), and Dì lóng (地龙 Pheretima , earthworm).
• Severe blood stasis: Add Táo rén (桃仁 Persicae Semen, peach kernel), Hóng huā (红花 Carthami Flos, carthamus [flower]), Dān shēn (丹参 Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix, salvia [root]), and Chì sháo (赤芍 Paeoniae Radix Rubra, red peony [root]).
• Concurrent qì vacuity: Add Huáng qí (黄芪 Astragali Radix, astragalus [root]) and Dǎng shēn (党参 Codonopsis Radix, codonopsis [root]).
• Pronounced cold: Add Guì zhī (桂枝 Cinnamomi Ramulus, cinnamon twig), Fù zǐ (附子 Aconiti Radix Lateralis Praeparata, aconite [accessory root]), and Lù róng (鹿茸 Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum, velvet deer antler).
• Upper body flat-abscess (jū): Add Jiāng huáng (姜黄 Curcumae Longae Rhizoma, turmeric).
• Lower body flat-abscesses (jū): Add Niú xī (牛膝 Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, achyranthes [root]) and Huáng bǎi (黄柏 Phellodendri Cortex, phellodendron [bark]).
