Tangerine Peel and Bamboo Shavings Decoction [1]
橘皮竹茹汤[1] 〔橘皮竹茹湯[1]〕jú pí zhú rú tāng

Ingredients:
- Jú pí (橘皮 Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, tangerine peel) 12g
- Zhú rú (竹茹 Bambusae Caulis in Taenia, bamboo shavings) 15g
- Rén shēn (人参 Ginseng Radix, ginseng) (or Dǎng shēn (党参 Codonopsis Radix, codonopsis [root])) 5g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) (mix–fried) 3g
- Shēng jiāng (生姜 Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, fresh ginger) 3–5 slices
- Dà zǎo (大枣 Jujubae Fructus, jujube) 3 pieces
Action: Harmonizes the stomach and downbears counterflow; boosts qì and clears heat.

Warnings: Contraindicated in
Rationale: Chén pí rectifies qì while Zhú rú clear heat. Both check retching. Shēng jiāng harmonizes the stomach and helps the other two agents to check retching. Dǎng shēn fortifies the spleen and harmonizes the stomach, its tendency to clog being counteracted by the Chén pí. Gān cǎo and Dà zǎo boost qì and harmonize the stomach, helping the Dǎng shēn to supplement center qì. They are only used in small quantities because their sweetness can aggravate the nausea and vomiting.
Variations:
Stomach yīn vacuity : Add Mài dōng (麦冬 Ophiopogonis Radix, ophiopogon [root]) and Shí hú (石斛 Dendrobii Herba, dendrobium).Blood stasis : Add Táo rén (桃仁 Persicae Semen, peach kernel) and Hóng huā (红花 Carthami Flos, carthamus [flower]).Phlegm-fire : Add Guā lóu zǐ (瓜蒌子 Trichosanthis Semen, trichosanthes seed) and Pí pá yè (枇杷叶 Eriobotryae Folium, loquat leaf).- Morning sickness: Shā rén (砂仁 Amomi Fructus, amomum [fruit]) and Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]).
- Absence of
stomach qì vacuity : Omit the Rén shēn (人参 Ginseng Radix, ginseng).
