Qì-Abducting Decoction
导气汤 〔導氣湯〕dǎo qì tāng

Ingredients:
- Chuān liàn zǐ (川楝子 Toosendan Fructus, toosendan [fruit]) 9–12g
- Mù xiāng (木香 Aucklandiae Radix, costusroot) 6–9g
- Xiǎo huí xiāng (小茴香 Foeniculi Fructus, fennel [fruit]) 6–9g
- Wú zhū yú (吴茱萸 Evodiae Fructus, evodia [fruit]) 5–6g
Action: Moves qì, disperses cold, and relieves pain.

Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Chuān liàn zǐ enters the liver, rectifies qì, and relieves pain. Wú zhū yú and Xiǎo huí xiāng are warm acrid cold-dispersing agents that warm the liver and relieve pain. Mù xiāng move liver qì stagnation, thereby also helping to relieve pain. These four agents together have a powerful qì-moving, cold-dispersing, and pain-relieving action.
Variations:
- Small intestinal hernia with cold signs: Add Ròu guì (肉桂 Cinnamomi Cortex, cinnamon bark) and Wū yào (乌药 Linderae Radix, lindera [root]).
- Heat signs: Add Lóng dǎn (龙胆 Gentianae Radix, gentian [root]), Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]), and Zhī zǐ (栀子 Gardeniae Fructus, gardenia [fruit]).
- Damp signs: Add Cāng zhú (苍朮 Atractylodis Rhizoma, atractylodes [rhizome]) and Yì yǐ rén (薏苡仁 Coicis Semen, coix [seed]).
- Vacuity signs: Combine with
buzhongyiqitang .
