Sinew-Strengthening Blood-Nourishing Decoction
壮筋养血汤 〔壯筋養血湯〕zhuàng jīn yǎng xuè tāng

Ingredients:
- Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 6–9g
- Bái sháo (白芍 Paeoniae Radix Alba, white peony [root]) 9–12g
- Chuān xiōng (川芎 Chuanxiong Rhizoma, chuanxiong [rhizome]) 3–6g
- Shēng dì huáng (生地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Exsiccata seu Recens, dried/fresh rehmannia [root]) 9–12g
- Hóng huā (红花 Carthami Flos, carthamus [flower]) 3–6g
- Dān pí (丹皮 Moutan Cortex, moutan [bark]) 6–9g
- Niú xī (牛膝 Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, achyranthes [root]) 6–9g
- Chuān duàn (川断 Dipsaci Radix, dipsacus [root]) 9–12g
- Dù zhòng (杜仲 Eucommiae Cortex, eucommia [bark]) 9–12g
Action: Nourishes and quickens the blood; strengthens the sinews.
Indication: Blood vacuity and inhibited movement of the sinews during recovery from bone fractures and damage to sinews.

Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: The four agents are the first four above. They nourish and quicken the blood. Hóng huā and Mǔ dān pí quicken the blood and disperse stasis. Niú xī, Xù duàn, and Dù zhòng strengthen the sinew and bone and fortify the lumbus and knees. This formula is especially suitable for the recovery period when the sinews and bones have joined, but have still not regained their full strength.
Notes: This is a variant of Sì wù tāng (四物汤 Four Agents Decoction).
