Ingredients

• Yì mǔ cǎo (益母草 Leonuri Herba, leonurus) 9–15g
• Chōng wèi zǐ (茺蔚子 Leonuri Fructus, leonurus fruit) 6–12g
• Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 6–12g
• Shú dì huáng (熟地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, cooked rehmannia [root]) 9–15g
• Xiān máo (仙茅 Curculiginis Rhizoma, curculigo [root]) 6–12g
• Chuān xiōng (川芎 Chuanxiong Rhizoma, chuanxiong [rhizome]) 3–9g
• Dān shēn (丹参 Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix, salvia [root]) 9–15g
• Bái zhú (白朮 Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, white atractylodes [root]) 6–12g
• Xiāng fù (香附 Cyperi Rhizoma, cyperus [rhizome]) 6–12g

Actions: Quickens the blood and regulates menstruation.

Indications: Menstruation at irregular intervals.

Method: Prepare as a decoction (original book says prepare in pill form).

Rationale: This formula is based on Sì wù tāng (四物汤 Four Agents Decoction), which supplements and quickens the blood and regulates menstruation. Yì mǔ cǎo, Chōng wèi zǐ, and Dān shēn are added to help quicken the blood and regulate menstruation, while Xiāng fù is added to course the liver and rectify qì, helping to regulate menstruation and relieve pain. Bái zhú fortifies the spleen, enhancing the source of qì and blood formation.

Variations:

• Blood heat: Add Mǔ dān pí (牡丹皮 Moutan Cortex, moutan [bark]) and Shēng dì huáng (生地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Exsiccata seu Recens, dried/fresh rehmannia [root]).
• Blood cold: Add Hòu pò (厚朴 Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, officinal magnolia bark) and Ròu guì (肉桂 Cinnamomi Cortex, cinnamon bark).
• Inverted menstruation (vicarious menstruation): Add Niú xī (牛膝 Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, achyranthes [root]).
