Minor Pinellia Decoction
小半夏汤 〔小半夏湯〕xiǎo bàn xià tāng
Source: Jīn Guì Yào Lüè 金匮要略
Ingredients:
- Bàn xià (半夏 Pinelliae Rhizoma, pinellia [rhizome]) 6–9g
- Shēng jiāng (生姜 Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, fresh ginger) 3–5 slices
Action: Harmonizes the stomach and transforms phlegm; downbears counterflow and checks vomiting.
Indication: Vomiting due to stomach counterflow with oppression in the chest, absence of thirst, and with tendency toward cold signs. Tongue fur: White.

Method: Decoct with water.
Dosage: Take in small, frequent doses.
Rationale: Bàn xià not only dries dampness and eliminates phlegm but also downbears counterflow and checks vomiting. It is the sovereign agent in this formula because treats the root and tip of the condition. Shēng jiāng not only warms the spleen and moves water qì but also downbears turbid yīn and checks nausea and vomiting. In addition, it checks the toxin of Bàn xià. Though this formula only contains two agents, it is an excellent combination that produces reliable effects.
