Five Kernels Decoction
五仁汤 〔五仁湯〕 wǔ rén tāng
Source: Empirical formula
Ingredients
- Xìng rén (杏仁 Armeniacae Semen, apricot kernel)
- Bǎi zǐ rén (柏子仁 Platycladi Semen, arborvitae seed)
- Yù lǐ rén (郁李仁 Pruni Semen, bush cherry kernel)
- Huǒ má rén (火麻仁 Cannabis Fructus, cannabis fruit)
- Guā lóu zǐ (瓜蒌子 Trichosanthis Semen, trichosanthes seed)
Actions: Moistens the intestines and frees the stool.
Indications: Constipation due to vacuity in old age or postpartum desiccation of fluids.
Method: Ingredients in equal proportions.
Rationale: All five agents are oily, and have the effect of lubricating the intestines and freeing the stool. Huǒ má rén in particular stimulates the intestinal mucosa to increase secretion and accelerate peristalsis. Guā lóu zǐ is also a powerful laxative. Owing to the toxicity of Huǒ má rén, this formula should not be prescribed in moderate doses for short period.
