Five-Seed Tangerine Peel Decoction

五仁橘皮汤 〔五仁橘皮湯〕 wǔ rén jú pí tāng

Source: Tōng Sú Shāng Hán Lùn 通俗伤寒论

Ingredients

Indications: Lung dryness and intestinal block characterized by cough that brings no gratification with copious phlegm, fullness in the chest and abdomen, and constipation.

Rationale: This pattern arises when the lung has been damaged by dryness heat and after the exterior pattern is resolved. Cough that brings no relief from discomfort is attributed to impaired diffusion of lung qì. Copious phlegm arises when impairment of lung's function of distributing liquid causes fluid to collect. Constipation arises when impairment of the lung's function of distributing liquid further deprives the intestines of moisture (the lung and large intestine stand in internal-external relationship to each other). The five seeds are all oily in substance and moisten the intestines. Táo rén moistens not only lubricates the intestines and frees the stool, but also moistens the lung and transforms phlegm. Combined with Táo rén, it also has a strong cough-relieving action. Chén pí moves qì and eliminates fullness, and mix-fried with honey also has a moisturizing action.
