Aconite Main Tuber and Cinnamon Twig Decoction

乌头桂枝汤 〔烏頭桂枝湯〕wū tóu guì zhī tāng

Ingredients:

Action: Dispels cold and relieves pain; supplements qì and blood.

Indication: Mounting qì (shàn qì) due to cold in the reverting yīn (jué yīn), with cold swollen scrotum, pain in the lesser abdomen stretching into the scrotum, and signs of cold in both the interior and exterior such as desire for warmth and aversion to cold, and reversal cold of the limbs. Tongue fur: Thin and white. Pulse: Tight and stringlike.

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: In addition to harmonizing provisioning and defense, and dispersing exterior cold, Guì zhī tāng (桂枝汤 Cinnamon Twig Decoction)warms the interior and disperses cold, and relieves pain and tension. Chuān wū is acrid and warm, and has a powerful qì. It disperses cold and disperses the entrenched surfeit of yīn, warming the channels and relieving cold mounting (hán shàn). Honey is added to resolve the toxicity of the Chuān wū and to help the Guì zhī Decoction work to warm the interior and relieve pain and tension. The formula thus addresses cold in both the interior and exterior.

Notes: This is Guì zhī tāng (桂枝汤 Cinnamon Twig Decoction) with the addition of aconite main tuber and honey.
