Lettuce Seed Gruel
莴苣子粥 〔萵苣子粥〕 wō jù zǐ zhōu
Source: Běn Cǎo Gāng Mù 本草纲目
Ingredients
- Wō jù zǐ (莴苣子 Lactucae Sativae Semen, lettuce seed) 20–15g
- Shēng gān cǎo (生甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix Cruda, raw licorice [root]) 2–5g
- Jīng mǐ (粳米 Oryzae Semen, non-glutinous rice) (or Nuò mǐ (糯米 Oryzae Glutinosae Semen, glutinous rice)) 60g
Actions: Supplements the spleen and stomach; promotes lactation.
Indications: Insufficiency of breast milk.
Method: Crush the lettuce seed, and boil with the licorice. Add the decoction to the ready-made gruel. Alternatively use the leaves instead of the seed: Wash and boil briefly in the ready-made gruel.
Rationale: Lettuce seed is cool and bitter. It promotes lactation and disinhibits urine. Note that the Chinese lettuce is similar to our coss lettuce, having long leaves with coarse midribs.
