Rationale: This pattern arises when heat and dampness are both exuberant, and dampness generates further heat in the interior. Hence the heat effusion gradually rises, and the heat is felt most strongly in the chest and abdomen. Thirst is due to exuberant heat, but obstruction by dampness discourages the patient from drinking too much. Glomus and fullnessness in the stomach duct, nausea, and vexation and oppression in the heart reflects impaired bearing of the stomach and spleen due dampness obstructing the center burner. Short voidings of reddish urine are due to depressed interior heat. The sliminess of the tongue fur slipperiness or sogginess of the pulse directly reflect the nature of dampness; the yellowness of the tongue fur and rapidness of the pulse likewise reflect heat. Cold bitter Huáng lián clears heat and transforms dampness. Warm bitter Hòu pò rectifies qì and dries dampness. Bàn xià harmonizes the stomach, downbears counterflow, and checks nausea and vomiting. Shí chāng pú is aromatic and transforms turbidity. Dàn dòu chǐ and Zhī zǐ diffuse depressed heat. Lú gēn clears heat, disinhibits dampness, engenders liquid, and allays thirst.

Variations: Miliaria alba: Add Yì yǐ rén (薏苡仁 Coicis Semen, coix [seed]) and Dàn zhú yè (淡竹叶 Lophatheri Herba, lophatherum).
