Liver-Regulating Decoction
调肝汤 〔調肝湯〕 tiáo gān tāng

Ingredients
- Shān yào (山药 Dioscoreae Rhizoma, dioscorea [root]) 10g
- Ē jiāo (阿胶 Asini Corii Colla, ass hide glue) 10g
- Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 10g
- Xiān máo (仙茅 Curculiginis Rhizoma, curculigo [root]) 10g
- Shān zhū yú (山茱萸 Corni Fructus, cornus [fruit]) 10g
- Bā jǐ tiān (巴戟天 Morindae Officinalis Radix, morinda [root]) 3g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) 2g
Actions: Regulates and supplements the liver and kidney.
Indications: Liver-kidney depletion manifesting as persistent dull postmenstrual abdominal pain relieved by pressure, and associated with pale,
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: ē jiāo, Dāng guī, and Bái sháo nourish liver blood. When liver blood is sufficient, liver qì naturally becomes calm and qì counterflow is eliminated. Bái sháo in particular, when combined with Gān cǎo, relaxes tension and relieves pain. Shān zhū yú supplements kidney essence. Bā jǐ tiān supplements kidney yáng, and Shān yào supplements spleen yīn. These agents work together to supplement and regulate the spleen and kidney.
