Asparagus Gruel

天门冬粥 〔天門冬粥〕 tiān mén dōng zhōu

Source: Yǐn Shí Biàn Lù 饮食辩录

Ingredients

Actions: Enriches yīn; moistens the lung; engenders liquid; relieves cough.

Indications: Pulmonary consumption with signs of insufficiency of lung yīn and heat such as cough with little or no phlegm, or with phlegm containing blood, tidal heat effusion, and night sweating.

Method: Boil the rice with water and a strained decoction of the asparagus. Add the sugar just before the end.

Rationale: The Tiān dōng used in this decoction is not the Tiān dōng used in Western cooking, but the small shriveled tuber of a related plant. It is cold, sweet, and bitter. It enters the lung and kidney channels. It enriches yīn and moistens dryness, clears the metal (the lung) and downbears fire. It is commonly used in Chinese medicine to treat yīn vacuity heat effusion, cough, vomiting of blood (blood ejection), pulmonary wilting, pulmonary welling-abscess (fèi yōng), and dispersion-thirst.
