Asparagus Gruel
天门冬粥 〔天門冬粥〕 tiān mén dōng zhōu

Ingredients
- Tiān dōng (天冬 Asparagi Radix, asparagus [root]) 15–20g
- Jīng mǐ (粳米 Oryzae Semen, non-glutinous rice) 30–60g
- Bīng táng (冰糖 Saccharon Crystallinum, rock candy) 1 pinch
Actions: Enriches yīn; moistens the lung; engenders liquid; relieves cough.
Indications: Pulmonary consumption with signs of insufficiency of lung yīn and heat such as cough with little or no phlegm, or with phlegm containing blood,
Method: Boil the rice with water and a strained decoction of the asparagus. Add the sugar just before the end.
Rationale: The Tiān dōng used in this decoction is not the Tiān dōng used in Western cooking, but the small shriveled tuber of a related plant. It is cold, sweet, and bitter. It enters the lung and kidney channels. It enriches yīn and moistens dryness, clears the metal (the lung) and downbears fire.
