Trichosanthes Root Gruel
天花粉粥 〔天花粉粥〕 tiā huā fěn zhōu

Ingredients
- Tiān huā fěn (天花粉 Trichosanthis Radix, trichosanthes root) 15–20g
- Jīng mǐ (粳米 Oryzae Semen, non-glutinous rice) 30–60g
Actions: Clears heat, engenders liquid, and allays thirst.
Indications: Damage to liquid in febrile disease with thirst and increased fluid intake; lung-heat cough; dispersion-thirst (xiāo kě).
Method: 30–60 gr of fresh trichosanthes root, washed and sliced, may be used instead of the dried from. Boil the rice in a strained decoction of the trichosanthes root.
Rationale: Guā lóu is cold, sweet, bitter, and sour. According to traditional theory, the sourness explains its ability to engender liquid, allay thirst, and moisten dryness, while its sweetness prevents its bitterness and coldness from damaging the stomach.
