Peach Kernel and Carthamus Brew
桃仁红花煎 〔桃仁紅花煎〕táo rén hóng huā jiān

Ingredients:
- Táo rén (桃仁 Persicae Semen, peach kernel)
- Hóng huā (红花 Carthami Flos, carthamus [flower])
- Dān shēn (丹参 Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix, salvia [root])
- Chì sháo (赤芍 Paeoniae Radix Rubra, red peony [root])
- Chuān xiōng (川芎 Chuanxiong Rhizoma, chuanxiong [rhizome])
- Yán hú suǒ (延胡索 Corydalis Rhizoma, corydalis [rhizome])
- Xiāng fù (香附 Cyperi Rhizoma, cyperus [rhizome])
- Qīng pí (青皮 Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, unripe tangerine peel)
- Shēng dì huáng (生地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Exsiccata seu Recens, dried/fresh rehmannia [root])
- Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica)
Action:
Indication: Heart palpitation, oppression in the chest, and heart pain due to heart blood stasis.
Category:
Method: Quickens the blood and transforms stasis; rectifies qì and frees the network vessels.
Rationale: Hóng huā, Táo rén, Dān shēn, Chì sháo, and Chuān xiōng quicken the blood and transform stasis. Yán hú suǒ, Xiāng fù, and Qīng pí rectify qì and free the vessels. Shēng dì huáng and Dāng guī nourish and harmonize the blood.
Variations:
- Stasis due to
yáng vacuity congealing cold: Add Guì zhī (桂枝 Cinnamomi Ramulus, cinnamon twig), Fù zǐ (附子 Aconiti Radix Lateralis Praeparata, aconite [accessory root]) and Gān jiāng (干姜 Zingiberis Rhizoma, dried ginger). - Obstruction of heart qì giving rise to stifling oppression: Omit Shú dì huáng (熟地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, cooked rehmannia [root]) and add Chén xiāng (沉香 Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum, aquilaria [wood]) and Tán xiāng (檀香 Santali Albi Lignum, sandalwood) or Jiàng xiāng (降香 Dalbergiae Odiferae Lignum, dalbergia [wood]).
- Fullness, oppression, and pain in the chest and a turbid tongue fur due to
phlegm turbidity : Add Guā lóu (瓜蒌 Trichosanthis Fructus, trichosanthes [fruit]), Xiè bái (薤白 Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus, long-stamen onion [bulb]), and Bàn xià (半夏 Pinelliae Rhizoma, pinellia [rhizome]). - Pronounced pain in the chest: Add Rǔ xiāng (乳香 Olibanum , frankincense), Mò yào (没药 Myrrha , myrrh), Sān qī (三七 Notoginseng Radix, notoginseng [root]), Pú huáng (蒲黄 Typhae Pollen, typha pollen), and Yán hú suǒ (延胡索 Corydalis Rhizoma, corydalis [rhizome]).
Disquieted heart spirit : Add Lóng gǔ (龙骨 Mastodi Ossis Fossilia, dragon bone) and Mǔ lì (牡蛎 Ostreae Concha, oyster shell).
