Butter and Honey Gruel

酥蜜粥 〔酥蜜粥〕 sū mì zhōu

Ingredients

Actions: Supplements the five viscera; boosts qì and blood; moistens dryness.

Indications: Used for general vacuity and emaciation, slight heat effusion in vacuity detriment, cough or expectoration of blood from pulmonary wilting or lung dryness, rough dry skin, and dry bound stool.

Method: Make a gruel with the rice, and then add the butter and honey.

Rationale: In China, the standard way of making butter is to heat milk in such away as to make the fat exude, although books do describe a vulgar method of churning the milk in a cowhide bag until it separates, which is similar to the Western method. ButterXX enriches the five viscera, supplements qì and the blood, and moisturizes the hair. Honey nourishes yīn and moistens dryness, supplements vacuity and moistens dryness, fortifies the spleen, resolves and harmonizes the hundred drugs. Modern research shows that in addition to containing glucose it also contains protein, amino acids, vitamins A, B2, B6, C, D, and K, choline, niacin, pantothenic acid, and trace elements such as folacin, magnesium calcium, potassium, sodium, phosphorus, Liú huáng, iron, manganese, copper, and nickel.
