Heat-Clearing Uterine Bleeding Decoction
清热止崩汤 〔清熱止崩湯〕 qīng rè zhǐ bēng tāng

Ingredients
- Zhī zǐ (栀子 Gardeniae Fructus, gardenia [fruit]) 9g
- Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]) (stir-fried) 15g
- Huáng bǎi (黄柏 Phellodendri Cortex, phellodendron [bark]) 9g
- Shēng dì huáng (生地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Exsiccata seu Recens, dried/fresh rehmannia [root]) 24g
- Mǔ dān pí (牡丹皮 Moutan Cortex, moutan [bark]) 9g
- Dì yú (地榆 Sanguisorbae Radix, sanguisorba [root]) 24g
- Cè bǎi yè (侧柏叶 Platycladi Cacumen, arborvitae leaf) (charred) 30g
- Shū gēn bái pí (樗根白皮 Ailanthi Radicis Cortex, ailanthus root bark) 30g
- Guī bǎn (龟版 Testudinis Plastrum, tortoise plastron) (calcined) 15g
- Xiān máo (仙茅 Curculiginis Rhizoma, curculigo [root]) 30g
Actions: Clears heat and stanches bleeding.
Indications: Heat entering the blood-aspect causing frenetic movement of hot blood and manifesting as profuse flooding and spotting with bright red blood, and dry mouth and parched lips. Tongue fur: Yellow. Pulse: Rapid.
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: This formula uses heat-clearing and blood-stanching agents to treat the root and tip of the bleeding. Huáng bǎi, Zhī zǐ, and Huáng qín clear liver heat. Shēng dì huáng and Mǔ dān pí cool liver blood. Dì yú and Chūn pí stanch bleeding. Huáng qín in addition to clearing heat and stanching bleeding, and is particularly effective for heat flooding and spottingGuī bǎn and Bái sháo nourish yīn-blood, calm the liver, and secure the thoroughfare vessel.
