Heat-Clearing Qì-Supplementing Decoction
清热补气汤 〔清熱補氣湯〕 qīng rè bǔ qì tāng

Ingredients
- Sān qī (三七 Notoginseng Radix, notoginseng [root]) 3g
- Mài dōng (麦冬 Ophiopogonis Radix, ophiopogon [root]) 15g
- Fú líng (茯苓 Poria , poria) 15g
- Bái zhú (白朮 Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, white atractylodes [root]) 3g
- Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 3g
- Chì sháo (赤芍 Paeoniae Radix Rubra, red peony [root]) 3g
- Shēng má (升麻 Cimicifugae Rhizoma, cimicifuga [root]) 1g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) 1g
- Wǔ wèi zǐ (五味子 Schisandrae Fructus, schisandra [berry]) 1g
- Xuán shēn (玄参 Scrophulariae Radix, scrophularia [root]) 5g
Indications: Center qì vacuity heat with a tongue that looks skinless, possibly accompanied by heat effusion and thirst. In modern clinical practice, this formula is used to treat stomatitis with dry mouth and thirst.
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Xuán shēn enriches yīn and downbears fire. Mài dōng nourishes yīn and clears heat. Dāng guī and Sháo yào nourish the blood. Rén shēn, Bái zhú, and Fú líng fortify the fortify the spleen and boost qì. Shēng má upbears yáng. This formula uses warm and hot agents to treat vacuity heat pattern. It should not be used by inexperienced practitioners.
