Scutellaria, Coptis, Tangerine Peel, and Bamboo Shavings Decoction

芩连橘茹汤 〔芩連橘茹湯〕 qín lián jú rú tāng

Ingredients

Actions: Clears heat and checks vomiting and retching.

Indications: Pregnancy vomiting (morning sickness), and dizzy head and vision. Tongue fur: Yellow. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.

Method: Decoct in water and take in frequent small doses.

Rationale: Under normal circumstances, regular menstruation if the manifestation of normal free coursing of liver qì. In pregnancy, the suspension of menstruation can affect free coursing, giving rise binding depression of liver qì, which can transform into heat. When this happens, liver qì can invade the stomach causing a pattern of liver-stomach disharmony, to which pregnancy vomiting is generally attributed. Huáng qín, Huáng lián, and Zhī zǐ clear and drain the liver and gallbladder. Bái sháo calms the liver. Wú zhū yú regulates liver qì; its hot nature is tempered by the cool agents. Chén pí, Bàn xià, and Zhú rú harmonize the stomach and check vomiting. Shí hú nourishes stomach yīn, thus tempering the Bàn xià and Wú zhū yú.
