Fetid Cassia Gruel

决明子粥 〔決明子粥〕 jué míng zǐ zhōu

Source: Zhōu Pǔ 粥谱

Ingredients

Actions: Clears the liver and brightens the eyes; frees the stool.

Indications: Red painful swollen eyes, aversion to light, copious discharge, headache and dizzy head, and constipation. Modern clinical research shows that this gruel is effective for hypertension, hyperlipemia, hepatitis, and habitual constipation.

Method: Stir-fry the fetid cassia (without oil) to bring out the aroma and allow to cool. Decoct (with chrysanthemum if desired), and boil the rice with the strained decoction. Lastly, add the rock candy.

Rationale: Jué míng zǐ is sweet and slightly bitter in flavor and cool in nature. It clears the liver, brightens the eyes, and free the stool. It treats red painful swollen eyes, aversion to light, copious eye discharge, clear-eye blindness, clouded head, or headache due either to upsurge of liver fire or to wind-heat congesting the upper body. Modern research shows that Jué míng zǐ reduces blood pressure and blood fat. Jú huā is similar to Jué míng zǐ. It clears liver fire and disperses wind-fire, treating headache, dizziness, or red eyes due to either cause. Modern research shows that it reduces blood pressure.
