Zanthoxylum and Flour Gruel
椒面粥 〔椒麵粥〕 jiāo miàn zhōu

Ingredients
- Huā jiāo (花椒 Zanthoxyli Pericarpium, zanthoxylum [husk]) 3–5g
- Xiǎo mài miàn fěnw (小麦面粉 Tritici Farina, wheat flour) 60–90g
- Shēng jiāng (生姜 Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, fresh ginger) 3 slices
Actions: Warms the stomach, disperses cold, and relieves pain.

Method: Grind the zanthoxylum finely, blend with flour and water, and boil to a gruel. Add the ginger and boil a little longer.
Rationale: Huā jiāo is warm and acrid. It enters the spleen, lung, and kidney channels. It warms the center and disperses cold, eliminates dampness and relieve pain. It is commonly used in Chinese medicine to treat food accumulation, cold abdominal pain, and signs of stomach qì ascending counterflow such as vomiting, belching and hiccup. It is also used for diarrhea and dysentery, and it helps to kill worms. Huā jiāo should not be taken in large quantities. Its use should be discontinued as soon as the symptoms abate. It should not be taken in febrile disease.
