Damp phlegm streaming sore

湿痰流注 〔濕痰流注〕shī tán liú zhù

A deep-seated sore arising in patients suffering from spleen qì vacuity when damp phlegm causing internal obstruction combines with additionally contracted evil toxins to seep into provisioning and defense. It begins with pain in the flesh, diffuse swelling without a head and without any change in skin color, and attended by cold and heat and generalized joint pain. When pus forms, pain and swelling become more acute, and there is vigorous heat [effusion] with sweating. The sore bursts to exude thin white pus, and heals once the discharge ceases.

Medicinal therapy: In the initial stage, Aucklandia Qì Flow Beverage (木香流气饮 mù xiāng liú qì yǐn) complemented with spleen-fortifying phlegm-transforming formulas can be used as oral medication, whereas Harmonious Flow Paste (冲和膏 chōng hé gāo) can be applied topically. After the sore has burst, use Internal Expression Pus-Expelling Decoction (托里透脓汤 tuō lǐ tòu nóng tāng). If the sore does not close and continues to exude thin pus, formulas like Ginseng Provisioning-Nourishing Decoction (人参养荣汤 rén shēn yǎng róng tāng) may be given to supplement qì and blood.

Acumoxatherapy: Moxibustion may be used to help disperse the sore in the initial phase.
