Abbreviation: YIS, YAS. Two pathways of the channel and network vessel system that together form one of the eight extraordinary vessels.

Yīn and yáng springing (yīn yáng qiāo) vessels

Functions

The main functions of the yīn and yáng springing vessels are to control the opening and closing of the eyes, control the ascent of fluids and descent of qì, and to regulate muscular activity in general.

Pathways

Overview

Description

Both channels begin from below the ankle.

The yīn springing (qiāo) vessel starts behind the navicular bone of the foot at KI-6 (zhào hǎi, Shining Sea). It ascends the posterior margin of the medial malleolus and the medial aspect of the leg, passes the genitals, and ascends the abdomen, chest, passing in front of the supraclavicular fossa. It proceeds up the neck in front of ST-9 (rén yíng, Man’s Prognosis), over the chin and up the face to end at the inner canthus, where it meets the hand and foot greater yáng (tài yáng) channels and the yáng springing (yáng qiāo) vessel.

The yáng springing (qiāo) vessel starts on the lateral aspect of the heel. It ascends the lateral malleolus and the posterior margin of the fibula to the hip. From here it ascends the posterior aspect of the flank and rib-side to the shoulder, where it turns forward and passes over the neck to the corners of the mouth. From here, it ascends vertically to the eye, where it intersects with the yīn springing (yīn qiāo) vessel, before following the foot greater yáng (tài yáng) stomach channel over the head to intersect with the foot lesser yáng (shào yáng) gallbladder channel at GB-20 (fēng chí, Wind Pool).

Acupoints on the Yīn and Yáng Springing Vessels

The yīn and yáng springing (qiāo) vessels have no points of their own but share points with several channels.

Indications

Yīn springing (qiāo) vessel signs: Eye diseases, heavy sensation of the eyelids and inability to open the eyes, clouding sleep (severe hypersomnia), watery eyes, lower abdominal pain, dribbling urinary block, pain along the waist and extending into the genitals, mounting qì, vaginal discharge, and tightness and spasm along the medial aspect of the lower limbs with corresponding flaccidity along the lateral aspect of the limbs.

Yáng springing (qiāo) vessel signs: Eye pain radiating from the inner canthus and insomnia, pain in the lumbar region, and spasm along the lateral aspect of the lower limb, with corresponding flaccidity along the medial aspect.
